The Domino Effect | Letters to the Editor

When trainers learn more effective and interactive techniques for helping transfer their material, the trainer and his/her participants win also! Here is some feedback we recently got from Michelle Lewis, training specialist at Unlimited Coaching Solutions.

“First, thank you for the awesome workshop on getting training to stick. I have had a great time and extraordinary success using my new tools and ideas.

The very day after the seminar, I had a session where I found out that the participants were not new hires, but participants who had already taken a few of our programs. I had 2 hours to revamp the curriculum so as not to be redundant.

In my past experience with this group, they were notoriously late. By 1:10 I actually had most of the participants there. I explained to them that I would be giving them bonus material at the start of each session right at 1 pm. For this session, I told them your 4 rules of motivation (I cited you, of course). Then I gave them 3 ways to create an environment where people could be motivated. I explained that if they came back on time from the break, I would give them number 4. They were all back in time!

I showed them how risk-free volunteering is by asking for one volunteer in each group, having them put a hand on someone's shoulder, and naming that person the first team leader and asking them to sit down. They laughed.

Overall, I couldn't believe how great the participation was during the session. I had had some of the same participants in a presentation skills class before who were very quiet, but during this session, everyone participated. It was probably my best session ever!

Thank you for giving us new tools that we could use immediately to improve our business. I’m looking forward to comparing the evaluation metrics over the next couple of months to see if the scores increase. We already had very high scores, but I always see opportunities for improvement.”
