Questioning Technique

Grade Levels: 4-12

Time: 10-15 minutes

Materials: Index cards (1 per student)

Group size: Any.

Purpose: To use as a safe questioning technique to revisit content and identify areas for re-teaching. This works with any content area.

Activity:

  • Give each student an index card.
  • On the front of the index card the student writes two questions. One is a question they know the answer to from the key content learned in class. The other question is one they want to know the answer to, again taken from the class content.
  • If students don’t have a question they are wondering about, they can write a second one to which they know the answer.
  • When students have written both questions, they stand up with their card.
  • Students will have 7 minutes to circulate around the room and find the answers to both of their questions. This will serve as a revisit of key concepts and will also bring to light any questions that none of the students can answer.
  • Students who were unable to get an answer to their question will give their card to the teacher.

Modification for ELL students:

  • Provide assistance for writing their questions on the index cards.
