Creative Tips for Computer Based Training

Becky Pike Pluth previously presented on how to design and deliver participant-centered computer based training (CBT). Sound impossible? Here are a few of her creative tips:

If there is only one-way communication in the training, such as training on a CD-Rom or asynchronous training online, build in parts where the trainee must contact the manager. Also, have a list of questions for managers to ask each trainee so there is some communication.

A weakness of CBT seems to be increased dropouts. “If they drop out at the last minute, charge them,” Pluth suggested. “Even if they’re internal clients, begin charging them for the class and keep their registration [fee] even if they drop out.”

If you want to encourage soft-skill usage during CBT, use a web-cam. e/pop (at www.wiredred.com) can then drag and drop participants into groups.

You can create an interactive word search for free at http://www.teachers-direct.co.uk/resources/index.aspx. You can use it in class, and you can send additional word searches after class. “A week after training, send it to all trainees. Say, ‘Hey, remind yourself of what you covered, have a little fun, and the first person to return the completed search to me gets a free candy bar,’” Pluth said.
