Award Winning Educators in Peoria, Illinois!

Submitted by Two Rivers Professional Development Center Certified Partners Jodi Bouris and Cindy Carr

Wednesday, October 1, 2008 was a very memorable day for us. We were extremely honored to receive The Pike’s Peak Award at the Fall 2008 Conference in Minneapolis.   As two of the first certified education partners with The Bob Pike Group, we were recognized for the work we have done promoting the Bob Pike Learner-Centered Teaching Model in our area in Central Illinois for the past year and a half.

We believe in the LC Model and know the critical importance of the many strategies used to promote retention that will serve to improve student motivation and achievement.  Because of the importance of using chunking, openers, closers, revisiters, the 90/20/8 rule, CPR, EAT, the Design and Delivery Model and so many other strategies, we have worked to train as many local educators as possible.

In our area we, along with the Bob Pike trainers, have:

  • trained over 400 teachers and administrators in RCTS and SCORE
  • trained staff in at least 20 schools that are not meeting AYP status
  • trained staff in over 20 other schools
  • trained 100 percent of the staff in four buildings
  • trained 100 percent of summer school staff in Peoria Public Schools
  • provided follow-up sessions in some of the schools
  • created a teacher-friendly checklist to be used as a self-assessment or for the purpose of a walk-through observation
  • observed trained teachers in their classrooms

We know the difference using learner-centered strategies can make with students and our goals for the future include:

  • continuing to train administrators and teachers in RCTS and SCORE
  • provide additional follow-up
  • collect data on teacher implementation
  • collect data on student engagement and achievement

We believe in the learner-centered model and how it can impact learners of all ages.  And with that belief, we will continue to do everything we can to help teachers make a difference and add value to their classroom instruction.
