PowerPoint Keyboard Shortcuts and Design Tips

Knowing that PowerPoint (love it or hate it) is a tool of our trade, here are some little known keyboard shortcuts to save you time and carpal tunnel!

Begin slide show

F5

Show/Hide black screen

B (or .)

Show/Hide white screen

W (or ,)

End slide show

ESC

View all keyboard shortcuts applicable

Run slide show and press F1

Find next misspelling

ALT + F7

Slide number, then ENTER

Another great tool available is the master slide—this allows you to create a template for all slides in that presentation without re-creating it. For example, you want the same border and your company logo as a watermark on each slide. Put it on the master slide, and it will be on every slide in that presentation. You can override features of the master slide on individual slides by clicking on Format and highlighting the feature you want to change on that slide like Background or Slide Color Scheme.

A full, printable list of keyboard shortcuts can be found at http://websupportblog.files.wordpress.com/2006/11/powerpoint-shortcuts.pdf or you can create custom shortcuts with a third-party add-in software like ShortCutTools.com which has a 30-day free trial ($19.90 released in 2008) or officeone.mvps.org/addins.html for $39.95 for a single-user license.
