Learning Activities to Engage Participants, Cement Knowledge

In our Instructional Design workshop, where we help our learners modify their own workshops to include participant-centered activities, we provide a wonderful list of 114 different activities trainers can use to help mix up the day and provide new ways to either learn or revisit content. Here are a few of these great ideas you can easily implement in your own sessions.

5. Articulate – Have your participants say things out loud to confirm comprehension and to clarify concepts on an individual basis. This supports the concept that learners have greater retention when they say things orally.

7. Behavior Modeling - Have participants observe a desirable or undesirable behavior and then analyze and study it. This is followed by practice with immediate feedback.

19. Concentration Cards – Adapt the Memory® game by creating 24 pairs of cards that represent key content such as Creative Training Techniques. When the 48 cards are placed face down, the object is to find the matching cards by only turning over two cards per turn. If the cards don't match, they are then turned face down again. The strategy is to remember where certain cards were so you can find them later when you know where its match is. Once a pair is found, the learner can then articulate the significance of the written concept.

28. Experts Unite – Participants meet and greet fellow participants by sharing a piece of information they already know about the topic they are about to learn.

57. Mental Imagery – This is a cognitive exercise where an individual rehearses things mentally before they even happen in order to envision a successful or desirable outcome.

68. One Word Whip – Participants share one word that describes how the training has gone for them, what they learned, or where they are at with the day.
