People like choices, so have them choose a color to decide on their break time during training sessions.
On a flipchart, use colored markers to make a line. You can use nine colors and assign each color a different number from 1 through 9.
Now have each participant vote for a favorite color. Each color represents the number of minutes they get for their break which is unknown to the participants. So perhaps pink is worth 5 minutes, purple is worth 7 minutes and blue and green are each worth 1 and 2 minutes respectively.
Add all the votes together to decide the break time. So perhaps pink gets 2 votes, blue gets 8 votes, green gets a total of 9 votes. Purple gets one vote that means the break is 15 minutes. If the break time is too long, then include a project as part of the break.
Pink gets voted on "not so often," purple gets voted on "even less often" and blue and green are picked most frequently, according to Becky Pluth, chief training officer at The Bob Pike Group. When choosing how many minutes to assign a color, keep that in mind. You may want to assign the more popular colors fewer minutes.
