Asked and Answered: Team Teaching

Asked: Can you tell me where I can find information on setting a format for team teaching like a definition, rules for team-teaching, etc.

Answered by Becky Pluth:

Bob Pike and I did a session at the 2014 ASTD International Conference and the handout from that is on their website. In that session, we discussed the five deadly sins of team teaching along with 10 techniques for making team teaching or co-facilitation work. So click on the PDF and print it out, if you'd like. The blanks found in the PDF are filled in below, and I think the guidelines are somewhat self-explanatory.

One of the things I can't stress enough is to stay in the room when your fellow facilitator has the floor; it is so helpful when you pay attention to what he or she is saying and can build on that. It also helps you avoid covering the same information without knowing it!

So here are the five deadly sins!

1. Going over time on your piece.

2. Disagreeing in public.

3. Violating standards and norms.

4. Failing to remember who is up front.

5. Leaving the room.

Bonus:

• Cookie cutter transitions.

• Wind out of sails.

7. Demonstrate respect toward one-another.

6. Appropriately hitch hike.

5. Guide on the side. Pre-arrange a signal for entering the conversation.

4. Proper preparation and practice prevents poor performance.

3. Being one anothers cheerleader.

2. It’s not you or me, it’s we.

We have other handouts on this topic that are part of our sessions, including Train the Trainer Boot Camp. I hope this gives you some guidance to head you in the right direction.

We also recently had a quick, fun commercial created by simpleshow that demonstrates what can happen when the aforementioned guidelines are violated. You can watch it here!
