Pass the Pointer

The next issue of SCORE: Super Closers, Openers, Revisiters and Energizers for Webinars is due out early this summer. Here is one of the exercises, a closer contributed by Darlene Christopher, that allows participants to each share one key learning they had from the session.

Objective: To reinforce key takeaway messages from a learning session.  To bring closure to a learning session by reflecting on the breadth and depth of learning that took place.

Time: 10-15 minutes, depending on class size

Audience: Any training audience at the novice level

Group Size: Any size

Material/Tools: Slide, pointer and drawing tools, whiteboard (optional)

Set-Up:

  • Create a slide with photos and names of all learners (reuse your learner introduction slide if you have one).
  • Directions:  What is a key takeaway for you from this session?  We will take turns answering this question.
  • Put the slide up when you are ready to start this closer.

Trainer Process:

  • Put up the slide with learner photos and names.
  • Ask for one person to volunteer by using the raise hand feature.
  • Use the pointer tool to point to the person’s photo.
  • Ask the person to briefly state a key takeaway from the session.
  • Thank the person and ask the person to select the next person to share their key takeaway by saying the person’s name.
  • Move the pointer tool to point to the person’s photo.

Producer Process:

  • When the first person begins speaking, lower his/her hand.
  • As each person makes a comment, add a check mark or other annotation next to his/her photo.

Debrief:

Thank participants for their contributions and make a comment on something new you learned from the session.  Comment on the breadth and depth of the learning that took place during the session.

Variations:

White board the responses as people comment.
