Back in the days of the one-room schoolhouse, students used slates and chalk to do their lessons. Not many books were available and certainly not a lot of paper. So slates worked well and were very eco-friendly.
Nowadays, about 75-150 years later, we're moving back to slates in a more high-tech fashion with some schools using iPads and Smartboards-eco-friendly ways of learning in the classroom.
