Be an Un-Talking Head
By Liz Wheeler

People learn through interaction and actually working with the material they're supposed to be learning. Most people do not readily retain information given by a talking head. So, is that you? Are you merely a talking head? Or are those in your classroom the lucky few who enjoy the training and are able to walk away knowing what they need to know?

Back in the late 1960s, Bob Pike was attending a workshop called "Adventures in Attitudes." He was thinking about offering it as one of his workshops, too. During the first two days of the three day session, he was frustrated by what he felt was a lack of communication, a lack of conveying information because the person leading the training rarely lectured. The information was disseminated through activities and small group discussion.

Day three of the training brought Bob's "a-ha" moment. He realized he could recall almost all of the topics covered because he had been an active participant in his learning. This realization drastically changed how he presented his other workshops.

Our Train-the-Trainer Boot Camp was created by Bob based on his three decades in the training world and the increase in retention he saw when information was presented interactively. The two-day boot camp provides exercises you can immediately use in your trainings to open your training with impact and immediately get people focused on the topic, models how to close your training with a meaningful wrap-up that helps participants plan to use the information they've gleaned, and gives techniques and activities for the in-between content that will make it more enjoyable for the participants and trainer as well as increase overall retention.

Our next Boot Camp is in Tulsa, Okla., our first time in that city. Janice Horne, resident Oklahoman, is the trainer. Janice, has a very strong background in banking, having worked as both a banker and bank regulator, and is a true believer in the "magic" of interactive training. She has a great sense of humor and is authentic in her interactions with others. She's definitely an asset to our team and is a great person to study under.
