BOGO Again in 2010

The Bob Pike Group will continue with its Buy One-Get One discount into 2010. The discount allows registrants to pay full-price for one registration for any workshop and then either attend a second workshop at half the regular price or send a colleague for half-price. "While we may be coming out of a recession, it's going to be slow-going," said Becky Pluth, vice president of training and development. "We want to do what we can to partner with those trainers to make continuing excellence affordable." To use the BOGO discount, you must register by telephone at 800-383-9210. Silver Lining in Lousy Economy: Pay Raises for Talent

High performing companies are looking for ways to retain top talent-which includes pay raises, according to a recent study by Institute for Corporate Productivity. The study, summarized in ASTD's Learning Circuits newsletter in October, showed that 18 percent of high-performing organizations have already taken the step of increasing compensation levels to reduce turnover, compared to 7 percent of lower performers. Over the next six to 12 months, the same ratio of high performers (18 percent) plan to implement pay raises, while almost a quarter (24 percent) of lower performers have plans to do so.

Other means of reducing turnover include better internal communications, increased focus on talent management and increased focus on succession planning. According to the article, "Among higher market performers, a full 91 percent point to communication as their top method of staunching turnover, compared to 71 percent of lower performers."

It might be common sense to figure out your company's goals and then tie training to that-but we all know common sense isn't so common. As a training director in your company, your first item of business needs to be identifying the true business/productivity goals of your company.
Some managers might think that with the economy the way it is, it's not as critical to figure out how to manage the Millenials. After all, aren't they just lucky to have jobs? And the answer to that question would be "no." If the job isn't all they wanted, they'll simply quit - and if they need to, move back home - and that's not such a bad deal. Beyond that, the Millenials are here to stay - and the boomer generation is not. More and more of them are retiring, and someone is going to have to take up the slack. And those someones are the Millenials. Managers who learn to understand this generation and how to work with them are going to be extremely valuable over the next 20 years. Will you be one of them?
