Creative Training Tip for Computer Based Training By Becky Pluth When doing classroom instruction for computers, you still want to make it as interactive as possible. An inexpensive training standard is the name tent. Fold one 8 ½ x11 inch piece of paper into thirds. On one side, have each participant write their name. On a second side, have them draw one red circle and one green circle so one is above the other when it’s vertical—like a stop light.
Have the participants then place this name tent on the top of their computer station. If the red light is on top of the vertical, other participants know this person is struggling with something and is inviting them to give assistance. After three people have attempted to answer this person’s questions, if no one is successful, then that person can ask the instructor for assistance. This system uses the experience in the room and helps ensure the instructor isn’t bogged down with answers that were already covered, said Becky Pluth, Bob Pike Group training consultant. Stress from a computer screen? If learners are motivated, they retain more information. But can you extrinsically motivate your session attendees? Is it possible?

But, as in many organizations, the materials once went mostly unused.
To encourage corporate library use—and learning—the training department initiated a TOM (theme of the month) Club. Membership is free. Each month has a topical theme – effective feedback, industry information and the like. Trainers, however, don’t disclose what the month’s theme is. Instead they post clues throughout the office and via email on the first day of each month. Employees guess the theme, placing their guess in one of the special TOM Club raffle boxes around the workplace. |
