Keys to Increasing Learning and Retention
By Bob Pike Group
Participants at a recent BPG Boot Camp ranked “Learning and Retention” as their number one need-to-know area of interest for the two-day session. We’d like your input on how you increase learning and retention in your training and presentations or how you’ve modified activities (adapted, adopted and applied) and information gleaned from us. Contributions will be featured in future ezines or our sister publication, Bob Pike’s Creative Training Techniques. Email us at ezineeditor@bobpikegroup.comwith your thoughts. Be sure to include your name, company, title and location.
A critical “piece of retention real estate” is a training session’s opener. We remember what we see and hear first, best. So don’t just start or even begin with an ice breaker. Open with an opener. An opener should:
o Break preoccupation
o Facilitate networking
o Relate to the content [If an icebreaker just breaks the ice, but doesn’t relate to content, don’t use it. An icebreaker compromises a strong open that can help learners retain relevant content.]
o Maintain or enhance self-esteem
o Be fun for the trainer and participant
o Create curiosity
